Viewing the Bangkok Folk Museum is like taking a fascinating journey back in time to see life through the eyes of a middle class family during World War II. It is an educating and thoroughly entertaining way of spending some time; familiarizing yourself with basic Thailand culture as it was. The museum actually used to belong to a middle class family who resided there at the time of Second World War. Thus there is no mistaking the authenticity of the place. The museum comprises of two main two-storey buildings which share a garden. The house is made of wood and has remained practically unchanged for 70 years. Mrs. Warapon Suravadee converted her ancestor’s home into a unique and fascinating museum. Each room features different articles. The attic is used as the ancestor’s room and is used to display all the articles that originally belonged to the Suravadee family; these include the Bejarong jar made from Thai porcelain which belongs to the period of King Rama IV.
One room displays a typical Bangkokian kitchen of that time. Another displays sanitation and toilets of the time.
The second building was intended to be the home of Dr. Francis Christian, the owner’s stepfather. Unfortunately he died before moving into it. It houses his notable cigar collection, which is the most interesting display of the house.
All the museum pieces are catalogued and there is an interesting story behind each article. The tours have to be pre-booked with Mrs. Suravadee, but a party of over 20 is not allowed. The museum is open from Monday to Friday and admission is free.
The Bangrak museum is associated with the Bangkok Folk Museum and houses records of the history of the district. The records regarding the building of canals and windmills in the area are particularly interesting and insightful.
A trip to this wonderfully unique and fascinating place is definitely worth your while. You won’t be disappointed with this charmingly different place.
