Lumphini Park This is a sprawling 140 acre vista of greenery with an artificial lake in the centre. It was built by King Rama VI and the park has a statue of the king at the south western entrance. Originally it was located on the outskirts of the city, but now lies in the centre of a busy hub. It is named after Lumbini the birthplace of Buddha in Nepal.
It is located on the north side of the Rama road in the Lumphini sub-district and is very accessible for anyone who wishes to spend a peaceful and tranquil day in this lovely park. The park has a track built in it and it is very popular with bicycle riders. It is a relaxing experience to bicycle around the track while taking in the scenic beauty of your surroundings. The lake is deep with nary a ripple to mar it’s smooth surface. Those who wish can rent a boat and enjoy the clear water of the lake. This is one of the few areas that is still patrolled by mounted policemen in the Thai capital. During winter, the Palm Garden of this park provides a beautiful setting for the annual concert of the Park festival which features performances by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and other bands. The park offers a bird watching course for nature lovers. It features around 300 trees with ample opportunity to see the beautiful fauna. It’s not just a nature park, it is a very important part of the Bangkok community. It has a public library which has vast resources and is a source of knowledge to all. The Smiling Sun Ground is an area which offers recreational activities for the disabled. It also houses the Bangkok Senior Citizens Club which is located in the Lumphini Hall. It has a revolving dance floor in the center and ballroom activities are organized every weekend. The Home of Hope provides advice and counseling to the orphans. The Lumphini Youth Centre is a hub of sports activities and youth pastimes. The Dharma Ground organizes religious activities for the benefit of the community. Food and beverages can be found in the Sri Thai Doem Food Centre. In the park you can relax, unwind and enjoy recreational activities merry go rounds and kite flying. Because of the diverse range of activities offered by the park it attracts roughly 20,000 people on a working day and around 40,ooo on a holiday. It is truly a beautiful community hub.
