This museum is a relatively unknown gem. Not many guidebooks and tourist maps display this location. It is also not very easy find. You can’t just sit in a taxi and say “Royal Thai Air Force Museum please.” And expect to reach there. You have to specify the location, Phanon Yothin Road behind the Don Mueang airport and then look for an imposing pair of black gates. To appreciate this place fully it’s recommended that you have a knowledgeable Thai guide as the place doesn’t offer detailed explanations of the memorabilia.
This museum boasts one of the finest collections of antique military aircraft. Some truly awesome displays include the only remaining Japanese Tachigawa trainer and one of kind Hawk-3 fighters which were once a part of the Indo-China-Franco war. A model of the Bomber II, the first aircraft to be designed completely by the Thais has a place of pride in this museum. You can also appreciate international wonders such as the Berguets, the Spitfire, the Nierports and the Boeing P-12 Es.
Apart from these fabulous crafts you will also find simulators, Electronic aviation devices etc. There is also a hypobaric chamber that is used for testing pilot’s physical readiness.
There are numerous other treasures which are crammed together for lack of space. It is an experience similar to Alice in Wonderland for someone who is interested in and passionate about historical military memorabilia.
For those who wish to carry away a memento from this fascinating place, there is a souvenir shop located just outside which sells model aircrafts, T-shirts, books and watches.
The museum is open to public from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Admission is free.
