  • History of Thailand

  • Thailand has a history which predates the dawn of civilization. It’s rich and colorful people have an ancestry that goes way back, 4,500 years back to be precise. It was previously known as Siam.

  • There isn’t a definite known origin of the Thais, but most agree that they cam from Szechuan, a province of China. Thailand was divided into two main sections, ‘Lan Na’ and the ‘Sukothai’.
Thailand has seen many dynasties come and go at the helm, but has remained remarkably free of any major upheaval. The first major dynasty was the Dvaravati which was a part of the Mon civilization. They ruled from the 9th to the 11th century. These people share a common origin with the Khmers.
Afterwards Indianized culture came to this province and brought with it Theravada Buddhism which remains the major religion in this area till today. This was brought around by the Khmer influence. This period also saw the incorporation of ‘Sanskrit’ language into the MonThai vocabulary.
The first Thai kingdom to be formed was the ‘Sukothai’ which was formed in collaboration between two prominent Thai governors of the time. The Sukothai period is referred to as the Golden Age of Thailand. The capital of this kingdom was Ayuthayya, which was located at the convergence of three rivers because of which this site enjoyed many geographical and economic advantages. During this period the kingdom flourished and extended its boundary of influence further.
The Chakri dynasty, which is the ruling dynasty of today, was formed in 1782. The first King was Rama I or Buddha Yo Fat Chulalok. This dynasty flourished and played an important role in making Thailand what it is today. The country is strewn with educational, cultural and other beneficial contributions made by this dynasty to the society.
Thailand is now a democracy, but the royal family of Thailand holds a very important position in Thai society and is revered by its people.
The various historical monuments of Thailand are a beautiful reflection of a colorful race of people which have flourished through the times.
