Nong Khai is the capital of Nong Khai Province which is located in the northeastern part of Thailand specially in the Isaan region. The city lies on the western bank of the Mekong river which separates Thailand from Laos. If you visit this place don't forget to visit Vientiane, the capital of Laos which is just 20 km from Nong khai.

  • This sleepy town has various communities which include some small chinese secta and even Vietnamese communities. The town is much influenced by Laos culture than Thailand. But still you have the Thailand culture prevalent. The mixture of all these communities give rise to different festivities and celebrations thus attracting lots of tourists to this place.
    The people of this place can speak a little English specially those words which would help them to sell or tell the tourists related to tourism. They are very friendly and polite people who are always ready to help you in need.
    How to Reach Nong Khai?
    Nong khai is well connected by road and air transport. The nearest air port to the place is Udon Thani. From Udon Thani the town is just 56km away. There are buses and taxis from air port which would take you directly to Nong Khai. Flights service from Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand.
    Nong Khai has a well developed rail route connected to major cities across the coutnry. You cab get direct train from the capital of the country to this city and that would cost around 700 baht.
    While you are on the place the best way to explore the city is the public transportation called TUK TUK. You can get though the city in just 20-30 baht for each person. You can ask the drivers to take you to the desirable place and bargain prices with them. While bargaining be patient, polite and talk firmly.
    If you can hire a bicycle then it would be great for you to discover the city and its surroundings. There are some places which hire bicycle for 30 baht a day.
    Things to see and do in Nong Khai:
    Prap Ho Monument Festival: This is an annual festival held in the months of March which celebrates the bravery of the Ho Chinese armies. In this festival the major attractions for tourists are the traditional dances,local music, large fair for selling different local products and other items. traditional dance, local music, plays, and a large fair selling local merchandise and merchandise from Lao. The other places of interest are Wat Hin Mak Peng is a meditation center for monks, Phra Chao Ong Tu one of the major Buddha images which is 4 meters high, the enchanting Nong Khai Nightlife, Fireball Phenomenon conducted on the river Phon Phisia where great balls of fire rise up from water and shot it in air.
    The place is full of spectacular views of different things which range from waterfalls to wild life sanctuaries. From Buddhist monuments to various festivals and celebrations.
