Sukhothai

Sukhothai was the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom. It is situated 12 kilometers away from the modern city of New Sukhothai. The literal meaning of the word Sukhothai is the Dawn of Happiness. The city is spread in a 6, 596 square Kilometer area and it is around 427 kilometers away from the Bangkok. This town was founded in the year 1238. It was the capital of the Thai Empire for around 140 years. In order to have an experience of the Thai village life, Old Sukhothai is the perfect place. It is a very quiet town with very less number of hotels. The best way to roam in the city is to hire a bicycle. Majority of tourists stay at the New Sukhothai that is around 12 kilometers away from the Old Sukhothai.

To start your Sukhothai trip, you can visit Wat Chetuphon. It is a mondop that protects four Buddha images in different positions. This is the perfect place to get familiar with the religion of this place. Tourists from all over the world come to this place in search of peaceful atmosphere. It is located in the east of the Sukhothoi.
If you wish to enjoy the Thai architecture, you can hit Wat Chang Lom. This is located in the north of Charot Withithong Road. This place has a bell shaped chedi of Ceylonese influence standing as the center. This Chedi reflects the image of the Elephant similar to the Kamphaeng Phet and Si Satchanalai.
There are several other things that Sukhothai has like Si Satchanalai Historical Park. It is located on the bank of the Rive Yom. It is open for general public daily in between 8:30 in the morning and 4:30 in the evening. You need to pay around 40 baht for the entry. It is the perfect way to get familiar with the history of the Sukhothai, as it contains several temples where you can get the feel of Thai religion.
This town is well connected by the all the major cities of the world. You can take direct flights to come to this place. It is advisable to come here in between March and October.
